Updated: Sep 19, 2023

Starting an art collection can be intimidating for some. Below are a few tips to help you have more confidence when acquiring an original piece of art.

The way that your home looks is a reflection of you and the life that you live. Each room should be an expression of you and your taste. When you use original artwork in your home, you create some of that personalization. You outfit your home in the colors, shapes, and textures that you love so that the home is more fully you. Whether you choose original artwork that is softly colored or bright and colorful, you are creating the palette of your home. The subject matter is also highly important to the works you choose, with your taste driving the type of painting that you want. When you make a highly personal decision, your home will better reflect who you are. Works of art are also great for simply enjoying as you use the room where it's displayed. Below are several suggestions on how to begin collecting art.

1. Ask questions.

Knowledge is power, right? So, the more questions you ask about the artist and the art, the more confident you will feel.

2. Work with a gallery you trust.

Purchasing through a well-respected gallery can enhance your art buying experience. They can assist you with their art expertise and resources.

3. Think carefully about your space.

Know your walls by having measured where you plan to display paintings before shopping for art. Lighting is important too and the right lighting will enhance your artwork.

4. Are you in love?

This is by far the most important question you can ask yourself. Trust your instincts. You are the one that is going to be living with the artwork, so it is important that you absolutely love the way it makes you feel.
