The mantel is usually the very first place your eye goes when you walk into a living room. It’s the anchor. So choosing the right piece of art for that space doesn’t just decorate the room, it sets the entire mood. Today I’m sharing 5 tips for styling your mantel with art to consider so you can create a space that feels intentional, elevated, and uniquely you.

  1. Scale & Proportion

Let’s start with the big one: size. A lot of fireplaces go up two stories, and it’s tempting to think you need to fill the entire space. You don’t. In fact, letting your architecture breathe can be incredibly beautiful.

If your fireplace is made of a gorgeous stone ( limestone, slate, river rock) let it be part of the story. Your artwork should complement that texture, not compete with it.

A good guideline is choosing a piece that’s not larger than your fireplace opening.  Large enough to feel anchored, but not overwhelming.

  1. Style & Mood

Your mantel art sets the tone for the whole room, so before you even think about color, think about feeling. What do you want this room to say the moment you walk in?

Do you want the space to feel calm and serene? Soft landscapes, muted abstracts, or peaceful seascapes can create that sense of quiet luxury.

Or maybe you want something bold and energetic. A modern piece with contrast, texture, or movement can anchor the room in a really powerful way.

You can also think of your artwork as a form of storytelling:

  • Do you want it to reflect the natural beauty surrounding you, the Hill Country light, the open skies, the landscapes you love?

  • Or do you want it to feel like an escape… maybe to your favorite travel destination?

  • Or maybe you want it to remind you of a beautiful memory or a meaningful moment in your life.

Art that evokes a personal connection always feels right above the mantel because it becomes part of the home’s emotional heartbeat.

Ask yourself not just what you like, but what you want to feel every time you see it. That’s your answer.

  1. Framing, Presentation

    & Even Fireplace Color

Framing changes everything. It’s like the jewelry of the artwork.

For a clean, modern look, go with a gallery-wrapped canvas or a minimal float frame. If your home leans more traditional, choose a moulding that echoes your fixtures, brushed brass, black iron, warm wood tones, or even antique gold.

And here’s something most people never think about:

If your fireplace isn’t made of stone, you can actually pull a color straight from your painting and paint the fireplace surround. It’s one of my favorite design tricks.

Choose a soft neutral from the artwork for a cozy, luxurious feel or go with a rich, saturated hue if you want drama and grandeur.

It creates this seamless flow between the art and the architectural element that’s holding it, incredibly chic.

  1.  Layering & Styling the Mantel

The painting is the star, but the mantel styling completes the look.

Layer in a few curated pieces, candlesticks, ceramics, a sculptural object, or a little greenery. You don’t need a lot. Three to five intentional items are perfect.

And if you already have a mirror above the mantel, don’t be afraid to lean a piece of art in front of it for a relaxed, collected feel. It adds depth and personality.

  1. Lighting & Atmosphere

Good lighting is everything, truly. The right light doesn’t just illuminate a painting; it elevates it.

A well-placed ceiling spotlight aimed directly at your mantel art can completely transform the mood of the whole room. It highlights texture, depth, and subtle color variations that you won’t notice in standard overhead lighting.

And if you can, always choose a dimmable option. A dimmable light lets you shift the atmosphere throughout the day, bright for daytime clarity, then softened in the evening for drama, warmth, and that luxe, gallery-quality glow.

Also, pay attention to how natural light moves through the room. Morning light, afternoon light, firelight at night. Each will interact differently with your artwork. Sometimes adjusting the piece just an inch higher or lower can change how the colors come alive.

And when in doubt, choose warm lighting. Especially in living rooms, warm tones make art feel cozy, inviting, and incredibly luxurious.

I get asked quite often about lighting, so I’ve put together a list of my favorite art lights, the ones I personally use in the gallery, and the ones my collectors have absolutely loved. Here's the link for you so you can explore beautiful, high-quality options made specifically for fine art.

Bonus Tip: Seasonal Swaps

Don’t forget, your mantel doesn’t have to stay the same all year. A bright, airy water scene for summer and a warm, moody landscape for winter can completely refresh your home without changing anything else.
