If you're an artist seeking to present your work to a gallery, it's crucial to approach the process with professionalism and care. There are certain approaches that are not recommended. Below are a few ways how you should not present your art to an art gallery.
The Mailer.
Do not send a postcard with your artwork on it. This is not an effective way to capture the attention of a gallery. There is too much junk mail it can get lost in. It is not cost-effective. Plus, with all the handling and travel your mailer will become dingy and not present well once it reaches the gallery mailbox.
No Flash Drives.
Similarly, don't try to bring a flash drive with your art on it as this is not a professional way to present your work.
No Unexpected Guests.
One of the biggest mistakes artists make is showing up at a gallery unannounced. This approach is not respectful and is unlikely to lead to positive results. Instead, it's important to take the time to research galleries and identify the best way to approach them. This could include reaching out to a gallery in advance to introduce yourself and your work, or attending an opening or event to connect with gallery staff and get a sense of the type of work they showcase.
By being thoughtful and strategic in your approach, you can increase your chances of getting noticed by a gallery and potentially having your work displayed. Remember, presenting your art to a gallery is an important step in your artistic journey and should be treated with the care and professionalism it deserves.
