Let’s face it, being an artist today is a lot more than making beautiful work. You’re not just the creator… you’re also the marketing team, the website manager, the email strategist, and sometimes even your own shipping department.

So what would I do right now if I wanted to boost my art sales and build a sustainable career? No fluff. Just the real stuff.

1. Get Clear on What You’re Selling (It’s Not Just Art)

Collectors aren’t just buying your artwork, they’re buying your story, your vision, and the way your work makes them feel. If you’re marketing without clarity on your message, it’s like painting with your eyes closed.

✨ Quick Tip: Write a one-sentence statement about what your art is about, not just what it looks like.

2. Set Up a Killer Website

Your website should be your digital gallery. No excuses. It should have:

  • High-quality images

  • Prices (yes, really)

  • A clear way to contact or buy from you

  • An artist bio that doesn’t sound like it was written by a robot

Helpful Resource: FASO (specifically for artists)

3. Use Instagram Like an Artist, Not an Influencer

You don’t need to dance or go viral to build an audience. Share your process, what inspires you, works-in-progress, and behind-the-scenes content.

Let people fall in love with the journey and the final product.

4. Build an Email List Yesterday

Social media is rented space. Your email list? That’s your collector clubhouse. Offer a freebie (like an art wallpaper or early access to new work) to get people to subscribe.

Try Flodesk or Mailchimp if you’re new.

5. Reach Out to Local Collectors and Interior Designers

Most artists sit around waiting to be discovered. Be the artist who sends a short, thoughtful email introducing yourself to someone who might actually buy your work.

Pro move: Offer designers a commission or package deal on multiple works.

6. Invest in Professional Photos of Your Work

Good photos sell art. Period. If you can't afford a photographer yet, learn to photograph your art using natural light and minimal editing.

7. Create a Signature Series

Collections sell better than one-off pieces. Start a series around a theme, medium, or mood and give it a name. This helps collectors connect more deeply and gives you a clear marketing focus.

8. Talk to Your Followers Like They're Already Collectors

Stop treating your audience like they’re strangers and start treating them like they’re already invested in your work. Use “you” language. Invite them in.

Example: “This new painting reminded me of the stillness I felt walking by the lake last fall. Where do you go to feel that kind of quiet?”

9. Make In-Person Sales Easy and Inviting

Whether you’re doing a market, pop-up, or studio visit:

  • Have clear signage and pricing

  • Offer ways to pay (Venmo, Square, credit)

  • Tell people how to follow you online

  • Invite them to join your email list

Bonus: Frame one or two pieces to show how they’ll look in a home.
