What is En Plein Air?

What is en plein air? Plein Air simply means “in the open air” and refers to an artist painting outdoors with the subject in full view. The plein air artist’s goal is to capture the spirit of the landscape. They can do this by incorporating natural light and color into their work. Plein air is not an easy way to paint…artists have to deal with hauling supplies out to the field; the changes of weather; bugs; critters and curious cows!

Plein air art developed with the emergence of Impressionism in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. The artists of today carry on the traditions of these past masters. We have seen a resurgence of Plein air painting in the last twenty years with artists gathering together to paint at a single location and they call them “Paint Outs”.
