My cousin Emily is one of my favorite people, even though she’ll absolutely remind you she’s older than me by a full, staggering twelve months. We grew up in different places but could always pick up right where we left off. Playing made-up games that we only new the rules to and putting on plays for our family who did not ask for them, did not enjoy them, and absolutely could not escape them. We were confident. They were trapped. We were superstars.

Last time she came to Fredericksburg, we stayed in a historic home just two blocks off Main Street. We walked everywhere, wandered the neighborhood, hit Vaudeville for lunch, Grape Creek for wine, Hondo’s and Crossroads for music, and just settled into that easy rhythm cousins fall back into instantly.
So for her next visit, I’m stepping it up. Here’s the plan:
A Morning Hike at Enchanted Rock State Park
Last time we skipped the hike. This time she’s going. I’m announcing this now so she has time to prepare mentally, emotionally, and physically. The climb is worth it, and I already know we’ll spend half the time reminiscing and the other half trying to decide if we’re still “outdoorsy” or if that ship sailed sometime in our thirties.

Pie from Fredericksburg Pie Company
Before anything else, I’m taking her for pie and coffee in the morning. Yes, pie for breakfast. It’s efficient and joyful. I always go for the coconut meringue because it tastes exactly like vacation should taste. And knowing my cousin, she’ll zero in on the peach pie.
We’ll grab our coffee, sit for a minute, catch up, and ease into the day the Hill Country way.
Wine Tasting at William Chris Vineyards
After the hike, we’ll head to William Chris for a tasting. The view is peaceful, the wine is wonderful, and it’s the perfect place to sit for a while and pretend we understand tasting notes. She’ll tease me about an old boyfriend, and I'll remind her of what a drama queen she used to be.
A Lunch Upgrade: Vaudeville, Round Two
Vaudeville is worth repeating. We loved it last time, and there’s no reason to fix what isn’t broken. It’s casual enough to relax but nice enough to feel like we’ve made good life choices. Plus, we love their vegan options.
Boot Shopping in The Burg
Every good Fredericksburg trip includes western boot shopping. So I’m taking her straight to The Boot Bar at Style 208 because it’s not just a store, it’s a full personality test. You customize everything. First, you pick your boot style, whether you’re feeling leather, suede, embroidery, or that tapestry moment that makes the kind of boots that have strangers ask, “Where did you get those?” Then you choose your color, and truly, the options are limitless. Next comes the height, anything from ankle booties to over-the-knee. Heel choices range from cowboy to Cuban to chunky to kitten to stiletto, depending on whether you’re planning to two-step or make an entrance.
And then the final question: fringe. Yes or no. This always reveals who you really are as a person. By the time we finish, Emily will be wearing boots she basically designed herself, and I’ll be pretending I don’t need another pair. I always do.
Dinner at the B and B: The Fredericksburg Way
One of my favorite things about this town is how easy it is to build a beautiful dinner from local spots without ever setting foot in a restaurant. So instead of rushing around, we’ll gather everything ahead of time: sausages and goods from Opa’s, jams and sauces from Fischer and Weiser, fresh bread made by JuJu Baker at Milam Station, maybe a dessert, like the Cambozola Cheesecake from Ottos.
Then we’ll take it back to our historic B and B and enjoy it slowly, without crowds, noise, or waiting lists. If you’re staying somewhere charming, you should actually enjoy it. The whole point is to feel unrushed.
Music at Luckenbach
She may not know this yet, but I will be making her line dance in Luckenbach. It’s nonnegotiable. We will need an excuse to break our new boots in. Something about live music and Hill Country air changes people.
